Sony Announces 4 New Blu-ray Players for 2013

By Rachel Cericola

If you've been waiting to upgrade that Blu-ray player, Sony Electronics just announced a slew of new models for 2013 -- four, to be exact. Each one promises to be packed with app options, in addition to delivering the best possible image from your Blu-rays and DVDs.

The flagship model for the year is the Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray Disc Player, which is now available for pre-order. The player provides 3D playback, as well as built-in WiFi, tons of web-based app options, and UltraViolet streaming powered by VUDU. However, the best perk of the bunch is that the BDP-S790 boasts built-in 4K upscaling.

Other features include a dual-core processor, two HDMI outputs, an IR input, DLNA support, IP content noise reduction, and support for Sony's HomeShare Network Speaker. Compatible with the free Media Remote app for iOS and Android devices, the BDP-S790 will start shipping on April 22 for $249 (MSRP).

Sony has yet to announce pricing and availability for the three remaining stand-alone players. However, we do know that the BDP-S1100 Blu-ray Player will be this year's entry-level model. If you want a little more oomph out of your Blu-ray experience, the BDP-S3100 and BDP-S5100 both boast improved WiFi capabilities and a new design. The S5100 also adds in 3D playback.

The BDP-S790 has a built-in 4K video scaler, as well as 3D support and WiFi access.

All of the new models will be able to access more than 100 (!) different apps and content services. Some of those include everything under the Sony Entertainment Network's Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited services, as well as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Pandora, YouTube, and much more.

Besides allowing you to be the ultimate couch potato, these new players can help viewers get off the couch and squeeze in a few minutes of daily exercise. Sony just announced plans to add the Fitness and Wellness channel to the network's offerings.

"Consumers have so many choices at retail and these new players were designed to make a striking first impression the minute you walk into a store," said Yamato Tanikawa, Sony's director of product management. "'Premium' is the best way to describe these new models, with their stylish quartz design and high end performance. They are the perfect example of form following function, delivering all the features consumers want for home entertainment and creating a striking focal point of the living room."

In addition to the stand-alone players, Sony will start selling its 2013 Blu-ray home theater systems this spring. Each one will include one-touch, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for an instant connection to an NFC-enabled mobile phone or tablet.

All of the Blu-ray home theater systems, in addition to the BDP-S5100 and the BDP-S3100, feature support for the TV SideView remote control app. Available for Android and iOS devices, this app allows users to stream personal videos, pictures, and music from a tablet or smartphone directly to the TV.
