Sony Adds Enhanced Extras to iTunes Movies

By Rachel Cericola

One of the drawbacks of downloading a digital movie from iTunes is that you lose out on some of the movie's special features. However, Sony wants to change some of that. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) just announced plans to offer enhanced extras on select digital movie purchases.

Now, don't expect to see the same bloopers, deleted scenes and featurettes that you'd get with a Blu-ray purchase. There are no commentary tracks, either. However, there are some very interesting features being offered here. One is Enhanced Search, which not only allows you to seek out actors and character names, but also allows you to search by dialogue. That means at some point you may be able to type in, "Who you gonna call?" and find the exact point in Ghostbusters where the line first appears.

Another feature is Clip & Share, which allows users to share movie clips via Facebook and Twitter. Also, the Interactive Music Playlist can seek out songs used in your downloaded film, and even provide links back to iTunes in case you want snag those tracks for your iPod.

Right now, Ghostbusters and the majority of the existing Sony catalog will have to wait. All of the new enhanced digital movie features are only available through iTunes purchases of more recent fare, including Burlesque and The Other Guys. Salt and Resident Evil: Afterlife have the Enhanced Search and Clip & Share perks. SPHE says that How Do You Know will be offered with Clip & Share and The Tourist will get the Enhanced Search and Clip & Share, starting on March 22, 2011.
