Sony Adds Control4 Automation Features to ES Receivers

By Rachel Cericola

We're used to hearing about all of the audio/video goodies that come along with new receivers. However, Sony is adding a little home automation into its new ES line. At least, into two of the company's three new receivers.

At this week's CEDIA Expo, Sony announced the STR-DA5800ES and STR-DA2800ES, saying that these are the first receivers integrated with home automation technology. That technology was made possible thanks to a partnership with Control4.

What that basically means is that each of these receivers comes packing the option for automation right out of the box. An easy setup wizard can create and control the system, allowing users to customize scenes with the push of a button. Some of the possible functions will allow you to turn on the TV and components, select the correct inputs and dim the lights, all with the touch of a button.

These Control4-enabled ES receivers can tackle audio, video, lighting, thermostats, energy management, security and mobile access -- all with one component, allowing homeowners to cut down on the rack clutter.

The 7.2-channel STR-DA1800ES is the only one of the new ES line to not include automation features.

Even though the functionality is sort of fancy, you shouldn't need a fancy controller. All of this works with Sony's free Media Remote app. Both of these ES receivers also have Control4 Simple Device Discovery Protocol (SDDP), Crestron Connected, and AMX Device Discovery features, making them compatible with other systems as well.

Other receiver highlights include an exclusive pure audio grade block capacitor, Sony's proprietary "Fish-bone" circuit board grounding system, and the company's own Sound Optimizer correction technology. The STR-DA5800ES and STR-DA2800ES also have Faroujda 4K upscaling, as well as networking features that will provide access to the Sony Entertainment Network. That means that users can choose from over 30 streaming services, such as Netflix, YouTube and Pandora, and stream them right to the receiver.

"Our nearly 30-years of innovation in ES A/V products have delivered many firsts including high resolution DSD and PCM decoding, HD video processing, and streaming video content built-in," Neal Manowitz, director of Sony Electronics' home audio group. "Now Sony is elevating the standard again by integrating Control4 home automation. Sharing a common vision with Control4, Sony's new products represent a commitment to expand automation to a broader consumer base and further support the growing Custom Install channel."

In addition to the two above receivers, Sony will release an entry-level ES model without the automation features. The STR-DA1800ES does have many of the other features, though, including built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and AirPlay,  six HDMI inputs, two HDMI outputs, and full Zone 2 support via HDMI.

Sony is currently taking pre-orders for all three of the new receivers, with plans to deliver in October 2012. The STR-DA5800ES has an MSRP of $2099, with the STR-DA2800ES costing just $999. The STR-DA1800ES, which does not have the automation features, will also be available at that time, for $699.
