Sony Adds 4 Receivers to Custom Install ES Lineup

By Rachel Cericola

There are a slew of home theater receivers that support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio formats. (See for yourself in our "2015/2016 Buyer's Guide to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Receivers.") However, Sony Electronics is making something special for the custom install market, packing those capabilities and much more into four new receivers for its ES Series.

Joining the previously announced flagship 9.2-channel STR-ZA5000ES will be the STR-ZA3100ES, the STR-ZA2100ES, the STR-ZA1100ES, and the STR-ZA810ES. All four models support 4K HDR capability, as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio.

Each of the new models feature six HDMI inputs (except the-ZA1100ES, which has five) and two outputs that provide HDCP 2.2, support for 4K streaming, High Dynamic Range (HDR), and the ability to upscale video to 4K 24p.

Because these models were made for the custom install market, they have plenty of perks that both you and your installer will appreciate. That includes options for network updates and the multifunction Remote Commander, which supports a variety of discrete operating codes. All four even have Sony's Auto Calibration technology, D.C.A.C. EX with Speaker Relocation. The STR-ZA1100ES and above models also support ihiji, a cloud-based network management solution, and are compatible with most common controllers, including Crestron Connected.

Another thing worth noting is that these receivers include Phantom Surround Back, a new feature that provides a 7-channel surround experience with a 5-channel speaker configuration.

As far as what makes each model different, it's first important to note that the STR-ZA3100ES and STR-ZA2100ES models can decode up to 9 channels. The STR-ZA3100ES can support 7 x 110 watts, while the STR-ZA2100ES drops that to 105 watts. The STR-ZA1100ES and STR-ZA810ES both boast 7 x 100 watts.

"These new receivers feature our legendary ES build quality and are specifically designed by Sony based on feedback from the CI channel," said Yukio Ishikawa, director of home entertainment and sound for Sony Electronics. "Their advanced audio and video performance make them the perfect complement to the emerging 4K UHD and HDR platforms and the ideal centerpiece for next generation home entertainment systems."

The STR-ZA5000ES is currently selling with an MSRP of $2,799. All four of the new ES Series receivers will be exclusive to the custom install channel, starting sometime in spring 2017. The STR-ZA3100ES is priced at $1,699, the STR-ZA2100ES is $1,399.99, and the STR-ZA1100ES will sell for $999.99. The entry-level STR-ZA810ES will also be available next spring, priced at $799.99.
