Digital music fans and audiophiles, unite!
The above statement is something that a lot of music lovers never expected to happen -- but it's happening, people. A slew of companies have been releasing high-resolution audio players with both the digital music listener and the audiophile in mind.
Now, Sharp Electronics is adding its name into the selection with its Wireless High Resolution Audio Player (SD-WH1000U). The SD-WH1000U can transmit 7.1 channels of digital sound, with support for 24 bit/96kHz uncompressed audio, all without cables or other add-ons.
First announced back in January at CES, the SD-WH1000U is based on the Wireless Speakers and Audio (WiSA) standard. That means that users can transmit music to any WiSA-compliant speaker system, as well as any traditional passive speaker with the Sharp Wireless Bridge (VR-WR100U) attached. This basically means that you can have high-res audio on any speaker system. It can even trasmit uncompressed Full HD video to your TV, via the Wireless HD (WiHD) standard and the included adapter.
The hook on the player isn't just the great sound, but that it also comes equipped with a SACD and Blu-ray disc drive so you can access a variety of different files and formats. The player can snag files on a hard drive via USB, as well as connect to a home network to play music from a network-attached storage device. Also worth noting is that it uses the 5.2-5.8GHz band, so it doesn't have to share (or interfere with) Wi-Fi devices.
Sharp has also made the SD-WH1000U compatible with the company's mobile app for iOS and Android devices.
Sharp plans to start selling the SD-WH1000U Wireless High Resolution Audio Player sometime in September, with an MSRP of $4,999. The Sharp Wireless Bridge will also be available around the same time, priced at $999.
