Say Hello to My Little Friend... in HD: Scarface Hits Blu-ray 9/6/11

By Chris Chiarella

I guess that Blu-ray players have become de rigueur in the hip-hop community because original gangsta Tony Montana will be going high-def this September 6th when Universal Studios releases Scarface on Blu-ray Disc. Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, F. Murray Abraham et. al. will be returning to our home theaters, this time in DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 and with restored 1080p, 2.35:1 video.

For those who have never seen the blood-soaked, cocaine-fueled crime opus, Scarface follows its title character (Al Pacino), a Cuban immigrant who soon finds himself employed by a rich, powerful drug dealer in Miami during the anything-goes era of the early '80s. Eager, tough as nails, and unconcerned with the laws of decent society, he rapidly rises to become a kingpin himself, only to see it all slip away just as fast. Scripted by Oscar winner Oliver Stone and directed with singular panache by Brian DePalma, the movie opened respectably in 1983 but has since become an undisputed hit around the globe.

To celebrate the upcoming reissue of the modern classic, artistic-leaning enthusiasts will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the home video event by designing Scarface-inspired artwork using classic Tony Montana images from the movie. Universal Studios will select the Top 25 fan submissions based on creativity, originality, quality of composition/design and utilization of the Scarface theme. Voters will then select their favorite ten entries, which will ultimately be included as exclusive art cards with the Scarface Blu-ray.

"I said don't touch the @#$!-ing remote!"

And the designer who tallies the highest total number of votes will become the Grand Prize winner, and will have his/her artwork shared with the world not only on one of the art cards but also on a high-profile billboard in a major U.S. city to promote the release. Tony's Blu-ray debut will be festooned with extras old and new, namely:

  • The Scarface Phenomenon: An all-new documentary that puts the modern gangster film into its proper historical perspective, from its pre-release controversy up through its influence in Hollywood straight through to the present
  • Deleted Scenes
  • The World of Tony Montana: A look at the world of real drug violence, dramatized in the film
  • The Rebirth: Director Brian De Palma, producer Martin Bregman, actor Al Pacino and screenwriter Oliver Stone reflect upon the evolution of their film, tracing its roots all the way back to the first Scarface film
  • The Acting: The filmmakers, Pacino and co-star Steven Bauer reveal the process of casting the film and preparing for their roles
  • The Creating: A colorful "making of" with tales of displaced production, how to kill a guy with a chainsaw, and the challenge of achieving an "R" rating
  • Scarface: The TV Version: We can take a look at the unintentionally hilarious changes necessitated for TV airings of the brutal film
  • The Making of Scarface: The Video Game: Yeah, well....

Where to Buy:
