Sanyo Announces Portable and Short-Throw Projectors

By Rachel Cericola

This could be a big year for you -- as far as home entertainment is concerned. Sanyo just announced two new projectors, designed for both home and business use.

First up is the PLC-WL2503 3 LCD interactive projector. Packing in a series of built-in sensors, this projector promises big images on almost any surface. It can also do those images at short distances, via an ultra-short throw lens. Sanyo says that translates into 60- to 110-inch images at no more than 47 inches from the screen, and an 80-inch image from a mere 34 inches away.

A wide XGA format can deliver a 16:10 aspect ratio, with a 1280 x 800 resolution, making it decent for high-def. It also has an HDMI 1.3 input for adding in other sources, such as a DVD player. Other connection options include a D-sub 9 RS-232C connector, an RJ-45 connector, dual D-sub 15 connectors, and S-Video and RCA composite inputs.

Other highlights include 2500 lumens brightness, a 500:1 contrast ratio, and control via Sanyo's own PJ Network. If you plan to use this one for business (or point out your favorite home theater scenes), it also comes packing a pen and pointer, both of which include an infrared (IR) transmitter.

If you're looking for something that can go with your flow, the PLC-XU4000 is a compact, portable solution. This XGA projector promises a 1024 x 768 resolution and 4000 lumens in a 7-pound package.

The PLC-XU4000 also boasts a contrast ratio of 2000:1, Sanyo's own three-layer filter system, and 69 percent less power consumption than other models. Other features include color shift correction technology, a microphone input, PJ Network support, and install help via an on-screen setup. Connection options include a D-sub 15 pin RGB component input and a second D-sub 15 pin RGB input, as well as single S-Video and RCA composite inputs. On the audio side, there are dual stereo mini jack audio inputs, a pair of RCA jacks, and a stereo mini jack. Added control options are also available via an RJ45 connector and a D-sub9 connector for RS-232C.

Sanyo says that both models will start selling this month. Expect the PLC-WL2503 to carry an MSRP of $1695.99, with the PLC-XU4000 coming in at $1545.99.
