Samsung UN55B8500 LED TV: $3099 - 55-inch 1080p, 240Hz, Local Dimming

By Rachel Cericola

Almost a month ago, we were talking up a great deal on Samsung's UN55B8500 LED HDTV. Well, if you didn't jump on that one, you may be in luck -- for once. Today, Amazon is offering a second shot at that big, beautiful set, this time knocking almost another $700 off last month's price. And enhanced scheduled delivery is still included in the price!  Here is the link:

Aside from the super savings over last month, this new price is also a whopping 31 percent (or $1400) off the MSRP.

Samsung says this will be its last LED TV to feature local dimming technology. Does it have the best ever black levels and contrast? We'd love a living room face-off between the old Pioneer KURO plasma and one of these LED LCD TVs. Well, we'd definitely love to own both sets, anyway.  But Samsung's upcoming 2010 models will all be edge-lit LED/LCD sets, not full array local dimming models.  So you'll have to act soon if you want to bring home that local dimming Samsung goodness (for more on the differences between local diming and edge-lit LED sets, see our editor's article: What is LED TV?).

The UN55B8500 is Samsung's last LED TV to feature local dimming technology.

If you are one of the lucky ones to acquire this 55-inch unit, you'll also be treated to a full 1080p HD image, Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology, a 7,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and five HDMI inputs.

Another nifty bonus is the Medi@2.0 and Internet@TV features, Samsung's exclusive content delivery and media viewing service. Partners include eBay, Flickr, Twitter, Amazon Video-on-Demand, YouTube and Yahoo!, among others. All of those features and more are packed into this super-slim, 1.6-inch deep cabinet.

If you need something a little smaller, Samsung's 46-inch UN46B8500 is also on sale. Check it out:

According to the product page, the MAP, which is the manufacturer's "Minimum Advertised Price" on the 46-inch set is $2399. You'll have to put the TV in your shopping cart and click through to knock another $300 off the price. Rest easy, though; you will see that special price before placing your order.

We're not sure how long the deals will last, so it's worth the hustle. Of course, if you miss out on the 55-incher at Amazon, OneCall also has the set on sale for a similar price (but with only basic freight delivery service included):
