Samsung Smart Media Player Combines Cable, Netflix and Other TV Apps

By Rachel Cericola

A few months back, Samsung Electronics announced the HomeSync Media Box, an Android-based streamer for use with the company's TVs, tablets and smartphones. Now, Samsung is coming out with a box that works without portables -- and costs a little less, too.

Samsung just introduced the Smart Media Player (GX-SM530CF), a box that can turn any TV into a smart TV. The hook on this box is that it can mesh your current live TV content with the likes of Samsung's Smart Hub. That web-based  platform can provide instant, on-screen access to apps such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, VUDU, YouTube, and many more.

It's also quite the helper, thanks to the built-in Samsung S-Recommendation feature. This provides users with new show recommendations based on what they currently watch.

That live TV feature means that you can ditch your current cable box, as well as the monthly fees associated with it. According to Samsung, it can support content from all of the major cable providers via a CableCARD.

Some of the other perks include Samsung's AllShare and Screen Mirroring, both of which allow you to pair the Smart Media Player with some of your favorite mobile devices.

"With our new Samsung Smart Media Player, we're providing consumers with an all-in-one solution that makes the TV-watching experience 'smarter,'" said Jim Kiczek, director of digital audio and video at Samsung Electronics America. "This great product brings the Samsung Smart TV experience to any digital TV, giving customers a seamless home entertainment experience that combines live cable content and Smart TV applications all in one device."

The Samsung Smart Media Box is shipping with its own remote and an MSRP of $149.99. It's scheduled to start selling on October 23, 2013.
