Samsung Goes Big with 65-inch LN65B650 LCD HDTV

By Chris Boylan

At CEDIA Expo 2009 in Atlanta last week, Samsung showed off a new 65-inch LCD HDTV, in its 650 series, The LN65B650.  The set offers 1080p native resolution (1920x1080 pixels), and a CCFL backlight which helps to generate a claimed 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus processing with 120Hz refresh rate combined with a 4ms panel response time should help alleviate motion smearing that can be seen on 60Hz LCD TVs as well as the motion "judder" that can occur with film-based sources such as Blu-ray Disc movies.  The new set also offers networking and connectivity capabilities including Samsung's Medi@2.0 Suite, and it does it all while still meeting Energy Star 3.0 qualifications.

Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus 120Hz technology offers advanced users control over whether they want to engage judder reduction (for 24 frame/second sources), blur reduction (using frame interpolation) or both, using a sliding scale for each setting.  This should satisfy film motion purists who feel that frame interpolation technologies impart a video-like artificiality onto film-based sources.

All models in the 2009 LCD 650 Series TVs (40-inch and larger, including the new 65-inch model) come equipped with Samsung's Medi@2.0 suite of multimedia features with access to a breadth of content via the Internet@TV Content Service, a built-in Content Library, DLNA networking and USB 2.0 ports to play movies and other multimedia files. Internet@TV offers access to Internet content from Yahoo!, Flickr, YouTube, and more via web-based widgets.

The LN65B650's outer bezel features an enhanced "Touch of Color" (TOC) design, produced through a dual-injection molding process that coats a translucent surface over the frame for a premium look.  The color fades from gray to transparent from the inside to the outside of the bezel.  And even at its large size, the LN65B650 still meets Energy Star v3.0 efficiency guidelines so you can feel good about the environment and your wallet as you kick back and enjoy the view.

And speaking of your wallet, the 65-inch LN65B650 will sell for a list price of $5999 and is expected to start shipping later this month.
