Samsung Dishes Details on 2016 SUHD TV Line-Up (Including Pricing)

By Rachel Cericola

Back in 2015, Samsung Electronics introduced us to a whole new style of UHD TV. The SUHD TV lineup is still going strong. In fact, the company is growing the SUHD selection, by adding five Curved SUHD TVs and five flat SUHD TVs, in sizes ranging from 49 to 88 inches.

The hook on SUHD TVs is that they aren't just your average 4K TVs, but feature a cadmium-free 10-bit Quantum Dot Display. Each one also supports high dynamic range (HDR), with a 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. Other perks include the Ultra Black feature for deeper, richer black levels and UHD-A Premium UHD certification, which means you should be getting the best UHD TV experience possible.

All 2016 SUHD TVs also feature Samsung's 2016 Smart Hub, which includes a new menu bar with programming and customized sources, as well as streaming services. According to Samsung, the new Smart Hub interface will be integrated into set-top boxes from Time Warner, Comcast (coming soon), and DIRECTV (coming in June), as well as several game consoles. This means you can just plug that set-top into your SUHD TV, and it will instantly recognize the box and program the remote.

The KS9800 SUHD TV is the company's flagship model for 2016. It boasts a better picture quality with increased brightness and contrast, with that cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum Dot display promising up to a billion gorgeous colors. It also has the new Smart Hub. Samsung will start selling a 78-inch version of the KS9800 series in May, priced at $9,999. Additional 65- and 88-inch screen sizes will follow in June, priced at $4,499 and $19,999, respectively.

Samsung is already shipping the KS9500 Curved SUHD TV, with one additional screen size coming in June. This model promises eye-popping images from every angle, thanks to a bezel-less "360" design. It has Quantum Dot Color and Supreme UHD Dimming to boost color and contrast, Supreme Motion Rate 240 for action, and HDR1000 High Dynamic Range. All three models in this lineup also come with a universal remote that can tap into lighting, security, and any other smart devices connected to the SmartThings platform. The 55- ($2,499) and 65-inch ($3,699) KS9500 models are selling now, with a 78-inch version coming in June for $7,999.

The KS9000 Flat SUHD TV is available now in 55- ($2,299) and 65-inch ($3,499) screen sizes. A 75-incher will be coming in early June, priced at $6,499. All three offer Quantum Dot Color, Supreme UHD Dimming, and Supreme Motion Rate 240 features.

The last of the 2016 curved models is the KS8500 Curved SUHD TV. All three sizes in this series have Quantum Dot Color, HDR1000 High Dynamic Range, and the "360" curved design. All KS8500 sets also have Peak Illuminator Pro to pump up those colors. The 55- ($1,999) and 65-inch ($2,999) KS8500 4K SUHD Curved TVs are selling now. A 49-inch model will be coming next month, with an MSRP of $1,699.

The final model in Samsung's 2016 SUHD TV lineup is the KS8000 Flat SUHD TV. This series has the Quantum Dot Color, the HDR1000 High Dynamic Range, the Peak Illuminator Pro, and the Motion Rate 240. It even has the bezel-less 360 design, the Smart Hub features, and an auto-sensing universal control. The 55- ($1,799) and 65-inch ($2,799) screen sizes are selling now. In May, the company will also ship the KS8000 in 49- ($1,499) and 60-inch ($2,299) screen sizes.

"Samsung has always been about the ultimate experience in picture quality. This year is no different. Our new SUHD models provide the brightest, most realistic color and clarity for every viewing environment," said Dave Das, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics America. "What is new this year is our redefined Smart TV experience. We listened to our customers and made enjoying content the easiest it's ever been."

Samsung also noted that the entire 2016 SUHD TV line can be paired with the company's K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. In addition to playing 4K Blu-rays, the K8500 can stream UHD HDR content from major film studios, such as Fox and Warner Bros. It also supports backward compatibility and can upscale existing 3D Blu-ray and 2D Blu-ray discs to near-UHD quality. It's selling now, with an MSRP of $399.99.
