Samsung Builds DTS Headphone:X Into TVs for Your Personal Listening Pleasure

By Rachel Cericola

Love late-night TV-watching with the volume turned up really loud? Most likely, the rest of your house (or block) does not share your enthusiasm. However, Samsung Electronics does, so they are packing something special into a crop of new TVs.

The company just announced plans to add DTS Headphone:X support to several Samsung TV models -- a lot of them, actually. A total of 44 new Samsung TVs will feature the surround sound technology for headphones.

This is great news, if you actually use headphones to watch your TV. As mentioned, some people like to blast the TV at night while everyone is asleep. This will allow you to hoard all of that sound to yourself, without having to suffer with an inferior audio quality.

It also means you won't have to have a full-blown theater setup to enjoy immersive sound. DTS Headphone:X works with any pair of headphones, including wireless models with Bluetooth. The technology boasts movies, music and games with a virtual 11.1-channel surround sound experience for one. However, you won't get all of those channels from these TVs; because of the chips inside, you will "only" be able to enjoy up to 5.1 sound. That's still very awesome, though!

When the technology first debuted in 2013, DTS said: "DTS Headphone:X is an advanced new technology that enables content producers to capture the acoustics of a high quality audio production studio for faithful reproduction on consumer-end products. The technology externalizes and expands sound, so instead of listeners perceiving that the sound is inside their head, as with traditional headphone listening, they experience it as coming from high quality loudspeakers located some distance around them. With benefits for both producers and consumers, DTS Headphone:X presents a whole new way to enjoy entertainment content over headphones."
