Samsung Announces New Exclusive Blu-ray 3D Movies Including How to Train Your Dragon

By Peter Suciu

Seeing someone train a dragon is likely to be a sight to behold, and one you'll only witness in a movie. Seeing someone training a dragon in 3D on Blu-ray will be part of an exclusive package from Samsung Electronics America and DreamWorks Animation. The two companies announced the exclusive availability of the Blu-ray 3D version of the film How To Train Your Dragon as part of the new Samsung 3D starter kit, which include the film along with two pair of Samsung 3D glasses for at-home viewing. This starter kit will be available to viewers this coming fall.

The film surpassed $480 million at the worldwide box office, and is the second Blu-ray 3D version of a movie to be made available exclusively to Samsung 3D TV owners. This follows DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens, which was introduced this past spring as part of the first Samsung 3D starter kit. Samsung further announced that the two companies will also make available an exclusive offering with DreamWorks Animation's Shrek film series, including all four titles from the franchise on Blu-ray 3D.

"Samsung and DreamWorks Animation bring together the best creative talent in animation and the strongest 3D TV technology in order to offer a new dimension of home entertainment. We believe that 3D TV adoption at home will increase as more global 3D hits, such as How To Train Your Dragon are made available to the consumer for 3D home viewing," said John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. "We look forward to a continued collaboration with DreamWorks Animation to deliver such rich content to the living room."

The company also announced a strategic marketing partnership with IMAX, according to a report in trade magazine TWICE. According to the story, IMAX will license limited use of its trademark and two IMAX 3D films from its original 3D film library, Into the Deep and Galapagos. The Blu-ray 3D versions of these films are exclusive for the next 12 months to Samsung customers.  Samsung has also partnered with Giant Screen Films to offer an additional exclusive Blu-ray 3D title to their customers: Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs.  All four films, along with the aforementioned two pair of glasses, will be included in the new starter kit with the purchase of a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player and 3D TV.

Pricing and availability of the upcoming Samsung starter kit was not announced but the current kit lists for $349. The current Samsung 3D starter kit is available now from Amazon.com, and (as mentioned previously), includes an exclusive copy of Monsters vs. Aliens on Blu-ray 3D.
