Samsung Introduces 3D DLP Home Theater Projector: SP-A8000

By Greg Robinson

As it's been widely reported, 3D was once again a major focus for display makers at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. And while most of this 3D technology found its way into flat panel displays and monitors, Samsung was one of the few manufacturers to show us a 3D-capable front projector in the form of their DLP-based SP-A8000.

The SP-A8000 features a single-bulb, single-lens design and is capable of 1,000 ANSI lumens of light output with a reported contrast ratio of 10,000:1 (full on/off). The 1080p projector features a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.

3D support for source devices such as Blu-ray 3D is made possible thanks to the projector's dual HDMI 1.4 inputs. Component video, VGA, 15-pin analog, composite, and USB connections are also available around back. And thanks to the Samsung's proprietary 3D engine, the SP-A8000 can also convert 2D content to 3D, "affording a realistic image and genuine 3D end result" according to Samsung.

Samsung's SP-A8000 is a 3D DLP 1080p projector with "dolphin-like" aesthetics.

The SP-A8000 features a high gloss, all black design with gentle curves that Samsung descibes as "dolphin-like." Like most home theater front projectors, the SP-A8000 can either be used in a tabletop configuration or ceiling-mounted. The unit measures 17 inches wide by 19 inches long by 8 inches tall weighing in at just under 24 pounds.

Pricing and availability on the SP-A8000 has not yet been announced.
