Samsung 2016 SUHD TV Line Has Quantum Dot & Bezel-Free Curves

By Rachel Cericola

This time last year, Samsung Electronics launched a collection of SUHD TVs. The company has yet to tell us exactly what that "S" stands for, but they are sticking with the 4K lineup for 2016, announcing plans for a new crop of SUHD TVs at CES 2016.

The new line will include Quantum dot, a bezel-less curved design, and IoT hub technology to make each TV the cornerstone of the entire smart home.

That cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display boasts the brightest, most lifelike colors that Samsung has ever offered. The company actually designed this year's SUHD TVs with lighting in mind, making every display capable of delivering an awesome image whether you have light in the room or complete darkness.

All Samsung 2016 SUHD TVs feature support for high dynamic range (HDR), with a 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. These TVs also include a new Ultra Black technology to absorb natural light and reduce light reflection.

The KS9500 SUHD TV is Samsung's first bezel-less curved TV. Designed to deliver the immersive viewing experience you'd expect from a curved TV, this model ditches the bezel to keep your attention focused on the content on-screen. The company says it made this model to be eye-catching from every angle, even removing the ugly screws from the rear of the TV.

All 2016 SUHD TVs also feature Smart TV features powered by the Tizen operating system. As previously announced, these 2016 models include a new Smart Hub and the new Samsung Smart Control remote. Other Smart TV perks include console-free gaming via PlayStation Now, streaming UHD movies and TV shows, and the Extra hot button for an instant, on-screen jolt of information related to what you're watching. There's also Samsung's Smart View feature, which allows users to share select smartphone content with the big screen.

If you need extra 4K content, Samsung is planning to launch an Ultra HD Blu-ray Player this year as well. The UBD-K8500 is HDR-compatible and boasts four times the resolution and 64 times detailed color expression of a conventional Blu-ray player. Other features include built-in upscaling for standard Blu-rays and DVDs, the option to play CDs, and a sleek design. Samsung is currently taking pre-orders for the UBD-K8500, with plans to start shipping sometime in March 2016.

And finally, all 2016 SUHD TVs will include IoT hub technology. This perk was developed in conjunction with SmartThings, allowing your TV to connect with and control over 200 SmartThings-compatible devices. That means you can control lights, door locks, and more, all from the TV. Just know that a SmartThings Extend USB adapter is required.

"Our new SUHD TVs represent our singular focus on innovation that matters most to consumers, by providing the very best picture quality for the home," said Hyun Suk Kim, president of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. "In 2016, we're going beyond anything we've done before to offer a remarkable synergy of design, engineering, and craftsmanship."

Samsung has yet to announce pricing and availability for the 2016 SUHD TV lineup. Stay tuned.
