Red Turns Blu: Redbox to Offer Blu-ray Rentals for $1.50/Night
The whole concept behind Redbox is awesome. Walk into a grocery store, get some tasty vittles, and rent a movie for a $1.
However, there was a major flaw for some of us: Redbox didn't rent Blu-ray movies. Thankfully, that's about to change. The company just announced plans to start offering Blu-ray titles, for only $1.50 per night.
"Offering Blu-ray rentals is an exciting opportunity for redbox to expand our product offerings and build on the relationships that we've established with millions of consumers nationwide," said Mitch Lowe, president, redbox. "Redbox is a convenient, affordable home entertainment provider and we're delighted to offer consumers their favorite movies on the increasingly popular Blu-ray Disc format."
Also, this just can't be good for Blockbuster, right?
We shall soon see. There will only be a few titles in a few locations to start. The first Blu-ray titles to be offered include The Book of Eli, Bounty Hunter, Brooklyn's Finest and Green Zone. If that's not enough to get you running to your local kiosk (or one that stocks Blu-rays), the company says that new titles should be added each week.
To start, Blu-rays will be available at approximately 13,300 kiosks across the county. Redbox says that number should jump to 23,000 by this fall.
To find a Redbox with Blu-rays in your area, check availability on the Redbox website.
