Polk to Ship Vanishing Speakers in December

By Rachel Cericola

Now you see them, now you don't. Maybe that's because Polk is about to ship its Vanishing Series speaker line.

Back in January, we talked up Polk's Vanishing Series, but it seems like the company will actually start shipping -- at least by December. However, they haven't just been holding on to these speakers for safekeeping. Since the announcement of those in-wall speakers, Polk has actually added in-ceiling models to the lineup, in an effort to covertly cover every space in need of a little audio.

"Today's home technologies have been trending smaller across the board, and demand is constantly growing for ever more unobtrusive entertainment choices," said Al Baron, Polk's product line manager. "With our new Vanishing Series, we've hit a balance that will please everyone, from the most finicky interior designers to the most demanding audio enthusiasts. In-ceiling sound is no longer a compromise."

The 700LS features transducer technologies to match Polk's LSi line of freestanding speakers.

The new in-ceiling models have woofers mounted to the rear of compact enclosures, with mid- and high-frequency units towards the front baffle. The units also include a newly designed Sheer-Grille, which measures 0.6mm in diameter. That, along with painting options, makes them even easier to hide. Designed for 5.1 or 7.1 surround systems and multiroom applications, these speakers also have 15-degree angled baffles for broader coverage.

A total of six models will start shipping in December. The 50RT ($229), 70RT ($275) and 90RT ($399) each have 3/4-inch silk dome tweeters and mineral-filled polypropylene midrange drivers. All of those drivers use the same transducer technology as Polk's RTi freestanding speakers.

The other three are the 500LS ($349), 700LS ($449) and 900LS ($549). Those models have a 3/4-inch ring radiator tweeters and aerated polypropylene midrange drivers. They are matched up with transducer technologies from Polk's LSi line of freestanding speakers.

Each of the above models is backed by Polk's new limited lifetime warranty policy, which also covers all new CI speakers from Polk.
