Polk Packs Big Sound into Blackstone TL Sub-Sat Speaker System

By Rachel Cericola

At Big Picture Big Sound, we love our big sound, even when it comes in a small package. Polk just announced the Blackstone TL Series, which is designed to fill the house with audio and not giant speaker cabinets.

The top-of-the-line model is the Blackstone TL3, which is available in black and white finishes. Designed to deliver audiophile quality in a compact package, the $749.95 speaker set includes four TL3 satellite speakers and one TL3c center-channel speaker. Those speakers boast Time Lens technology, a 3.25-inch mid-bass driver, a 3.25-inch Aerated Polypropylene Cone (APP), and a .75-inch ring radiator tweeter, which is similar to Polk's LSi and LCi series. Each speaker also has Polk's patented PowerPort technology, which cuts out the port noise and pumps up the bass quality.

Speaking of bass, if you really want to add some to this set, the DSWPro 550W is made as a match, for $559. This wireless-ready subwoofer comes with a plug-and-play kit to make the unit wireless within seconds. That means you can place the unit almost anywhere, without cable clutter. If you are worried that the placement seems a little too easy, the sub also has Polk Room Optimizer (PRO) room correction, which helps with the perfect placement.

The TL1600 includes four TL1 speakers, a TL1 center channel, and a 50-watt powered subwoofer.

So you can get big sound from a small cabinet. However, it's also very possible with a small budget. Polk has included a few less expensive options in the Blackstone TL1 and TL2 Series. Both have the Time Lens technology, Polk's Dynamic Balance Driver Technology, a curved enclosure design, and the shiny Blackstone finishes.

The TL2 will come two ways. Choose the five-piece TL250 surround system for $499.95, or add a powered subwoofer for $749.95. The T2 speakers have the PowerPort technology, .75-inch silk dome tweeters and 3.25-inch composite injection molded cones with Dynamic Balance Driver Technology.

The TL1 Series has .5-inch silk dome tweeters, 2.5-inch long-throw drivers, and tuned satellite and center-channel rear ports. The five-piece TL150 speaker series has an SRP of $399.95, with the powered subwoofer costing an additional $100.

Polk says that the Blackstone TL350/DSWPro 550W and TL2 models will ship in Q4 2010. If you can't wait, look for the TL1 Series sometime this month.
