Polk's HitMaster Rocks the Gaming Market

By Rachel Cericola

Polk may not be a one-hit wonder, but they can help belt them out -- via the HitMaster.

This gaming stage monitor is for serious rockstar wannabes. Weighing in at 13 pounds, the HitMaster pumps 80 watts (60 watts RMS) into your Rock Band and Guitar Hero gameplay. It's also a single-point stereo system. Using two 2.5-by-5.5-inch horns, two 1-inch tweeters and a 6.5-inch woofer, it can produce an immersive soundfield so real, you'll want a second and third encore.

"Rock Band and Guitar Hero are a blast, but what impresses me the most about these games is the extraordinary attention to the quality of the recording masters themselves," says Mark Suskind, Polk's VP of Product Line Management. "But with all this attention to the quality of the soundtracks, most games are played through standard TV speakers, which are dismal at best. That's where HitMaster will make a difference."

Other features include a frequency response rated at 40Hz-20kHz (-10dB), line-level inputs and outputs, and a 1/8-inch input jack for hookups to an iPod or other portable players.

Get ready to rock -- well, you actually have some time. The HitMaster won't start shipping until 2010. The MSRP should be just under $100.
