Pioneer Adds Six New Elite 3D-Ready Home Theater Receivers

By Rachel Cericola

Pioneer is making receiver selection a lot more difficult, but enticing too! The company just announced four [editor's note: actually make that six] new additions to its high-end Elite line of home theater receivers.  Each one offers HDMI 1.4a compatibility, which means 3D passthrough from source to display for everyone who wants that -- and they do mean everyone. Two of those models, the VSX-30 and VSX-31, are very affordable at $550 and $650, respectively.

All of the new models feature iPhone and iPod touch capabilities. This includes Pioneer's own iControlAV App, a free app available from Apple's App Store which turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into an advanced home theater remote. Every model in the Elite line also has "Works with iPhone" certification. These new receivers also boast PureCinema video processing, with the VSX-32 and higher models boasting Marvell Qdeo video processing and upconversion technology.

The flagship SC-37 features Home Media Gallery, which allows photos and music to be streamed from networked computers.

Other highlights include a Wide Surround mode, Advanced Multi-Channel AcoustiC Calibration (MCACC), and Sound Retriever AIR, a new feature promising a boost to compressed audio files transmitted via Bluetooth. Speaking of which: These receivers do support Bluetooth connectivity, but you'll need the optional $99 AS-BT100 adapter.

There are four other new models with a few interesting perks. The next in the line is the VSX-32 ($800), which offers HDMI jitter reduction, for a better image and natural sound field from digital source components.

Discerning tastes will appreciate the $2,200 flagship SC-37, which includes Home Media Gallery. This feature allows users to snag photos and music from networked computers and view or listen to these files through the home theater system. Once you get tired of your own content, the receiver can also tap into Sirius Satellite Radio and Rhapsody (separate subscriptions are required).

Other features for all of the new models include THX and Air Studios certification, as well as options for second and third zones. There are also plenty of connection options, with dual HDMI outputs, as well as a front HDMI input on each.

The complete line of new Pioneer Elite receiver models will be rolling out during July and August.  The models include:

  • VSX-30 (MSRP: $550, July)
  • VSX-31 (MSRP: $650, July)
  • VSX-32 (MSRP: $800, July)
  • VSX-33 (MSRP: $1,000, July)
  • SC-35 (MSRP: $1,600, August)
  • SC-37 (MSRP: $2,200, August)
