At 2011's Consumer Electronics Show, there will be endless rows of companies touting new TVs, A/V components and other nifty gadgets. Panasonic, Sony, TDK and Philips will be showing off something a little different: their new Emmy award.

Panasonic just announced that they will be accepting the 62nd annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Award at CES, along with Royal Philips Electronics, Sony Corporation and TDK Corporation. The award is to honor theĀ  four companies for their work with Blue Laser Optical Systems for Consumer Playback, otherwise known as Blu-ray disc.

"Panasonic is proud to have developed so many of the key technologies introduced in the Blu-ray Disc format. These are not only optical disc technologies, such as Dual Layer 50GB discs, but also leading-edge audio visual technologies such as video compression, authoring and 3D," said Shunji O'hara executive engineer for Panasonic's Corporate R&D. "It is a great pleasure to see consumers around the world enjoying an advanced AV lifestyle with Blu-ray Disc devices."

The ceremony will be held on January 6, 2011 at CES, which is held every year in Las Vegas.

Panasonic, Philips and Sony first started working on a blue laser optical system back in 1997. Three years later, the companies joined forces for the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

According to the announcement, over 1400 million pre-recorded Blu-ray discs, 188 million Blu-ray recordable/rewritable discs, 50 million Blu-ray players and recorders, 41 million PlayStation 3 units and over 25 million Blu-ray PC readers and writers have shipped since the format first debuted in 2006.
