Optoma Debuts Affordable PT105 PlayTime Projector

By Rachel Cericola

We know a few of you out there are probably hoping for a projector under the tree this year. Of course, Santa can't always fit a projector into his sleigh -- or his budget. Optoma is hoping to change that with the newly announced PT105 Projector.

Priced at just $229 (MSRP), this is the second projector in Optoma's PlayTime line. The 75-lumen, plug-and-play projector features a WVGA resolution (854x480 pixels), a contrast ratio of 1000:1, and a LED light source promising over 20,000 hours of entertainment.

"The response to our PlayTime line has been very strong," said Jon Grodem, Optoma's senior director of product and marketing. "We're expecting that the PT105's increased power and connectivity, coupled with its affordable price, will appeal to a lot of consumers."

Boasting the ability to project images up to 140 inches in size, the PT105 is compatible with any device supporting HDMI, VGA or composite video output. Of course, that includes Blu-ray and DVD players, computers, and gaming consoles. It also has a built-in 1.5-watt speaker, meaning that there's minimal setup.

Weighing in at just 1.9 pounds, the PT105 is easy to set up almost anywhere. It's portable, so you can take that big-screen image to the living room, the backyard, or even a friend's house.

"Optoma has been the driving force in what some analysts are calling 'new era' projectors -- these use new illumination technologies to provide good image quality with as little lumens as 500 lumens or below," added Grodem. "We've felt for some time that it was important to lower the entry barrier for new users, and with products like our PlayTime and Pico projectors, we're proving it."
