Onkyo Unveils HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 7.1 Home Theater Systems

By Rachel Cericola

Stop second-guessing your HTiB (home theater in a box) choices. Onkyo has put together the perfect home theater package to complement your Blu-ray player and HDTV -- two of them, actually.

The new HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 feature 7.1-channel sound for an immersive surround sound experience. Each one also includes an A/V receiver with 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs, 130 watt-per-channel amplification, an active subwoofer and support for virtually every major surround sound format known to man (including Dolby's new ProLogiz IIz!). Both systems also have Onkyo's own U-Port for one-cable charging and playback for your iPod.

Both sets include seven glossy black speakers and a 230-watt bass reflex subwoofer with a 10-inch driver. The HT-S7200 has dual-drive tallboy speakers in the front, each with two 3.25-inch woofers and a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter. There's also a horizontal center channel with the same drivers and four smaller speakers for rear and side surround duties. If you like your current sub, the speakers are also available separately as the SKS-HT870 package for $499. The HT-S6200 has smaller, bookshelf-sized cabinets, each with 4-inch woofers and a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter on the three front speakers and 3.25-inch full-range units for the surrounds.

Onkyo's HT-S7200 can upscale component and composite video sources to 1080i.

The HT-S7200 features five HDMI 1.3a inputs and the HT-S6200 has four. The HT-S7200 can upscale component and composite video sources to 1080i, using Faroudja DCDi Edge deinterlacing for a smooth conversion process. Blu-ray and other 1080p sources can be passed through over HDMI at full HD 1080p resolution.  Other features include the Audyssey 2EQ automatic room correction and calibration system, Audyssey Dynamic EQ, and Audyssey Dynamic Volume.

Both systems are shipping now, with the Onkyo HT-S7200 coming in at $899 and the HT-S6200 running $699. If you're needing a Blu-ray player to match the system, Onkyo just announced its DV-BD507, which is also now shipping.
