It's not often that a consumer electronics product you already own gets a major update, bringing it all new functionality. SONOS is well known for that, bringing new functionality to existing owners via ongoing software updates. Also, the Sony PS3 was probably one of the best examples of this with loads of new features added along the way: DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, Netflix streaming, 3D capability and so much more, all delivered via free network updates. Now owners of certain Onkyo receivers can count themselves among the lucky few as a promised firmware update is being delivered today that adds Dolby Atmos decoding to select 2014 model year home theater receivers.
According to a communication from Onkyo this morning, the Onkyo TX-NR636 ($699), TX-NR737 ($949) and TX-NR838 ($1,299) will each get access to the firmware update that delivers Dolby Atmos decoding to these receivers today. Those who have their receivers connected to the internet should get a notice about the firmware availability.
Onkyo recommends using a hard-wired ethernet connection for the update as the file size is fairly large. The update procedure itself can take up to an hour to complete. Onkyo recommends disabling HDMI control (HDCP, or "RIHD" by Onkyo's nomenclature) during the update. You can also simply disconnect any HDMI-connected devices during the update and plug them back in after the update has completed.
