Onkyo Enters Headphone Market with 4 Models

By Rachel Cericola

Headphones are no longer a throwaway item that live inside your smelly gym bag. They've become a huge audio business -- and Onkyo wants in. The company just announced four of its first headphone products at the 2013 International CES.

First up will be two closed-back, on-ear models. The ES-HF300 promises an audiophile-grade cable, with the ES-FC300 packing a tangle-free elastomer cable. Both fold up for easy travel. When unfolded, two 40mm titanium drivers will be ready to rock you on the go. Other features include ported bass sub-chambers, an aluminum driver housing, and a single aluminum hanger for an understated profile.

That ES-HF300 is a bit of a standout, with the 6N oxygen-free copper cable encased in clear elastomer. For $179, it also has gold-plated MMCX connectors and a mini-stereo plug. The ES-FC300, on the other hand, will come in three finishes: black with a red cable, white with white, and violet with violet -- each priced at $149.

If you're partial to in-ear headphones, the IE-HF300 and IE-FC300 will be released in the coming months. Each one features a 14.3mm dynamic transducer. However, the IE-HF300 comes with an audiophile-grade 6N copper cable for $129, with the IE-FC300 packing your choice of red, violet, or white tangle-free elastomer cables for $99 each.

At some point, Onkyo is also planning to release a compatible app for headphone users. Designed for smartphones and tablets, the unnamed app will include a headphone equalizer and frequency response adjustments.
