Onkyo Debuts TX-NR5009 and TX-NR3009 Network Receivers

By Rachel Cericola

It's been a pretty good summer, but Onkyo is ready to rock the the fall with two top-of-the-line receiver options: the TX-NR5009 and TX-NR3009.

Both flagship 9.2-channel receivers have THX Ultra2 Plus certification and HQV-Vida processing. The addition of Marvel Qdeo technology can also upscale 1080p video to a full 4K (3840 x 2160). Other common features include DTS Neo:X dimensional surround processing, Dolby Volume, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 room-correction and equalization technology, ISFccc video calibration, and support for streaming Internet radio channels.

Some of those channels include Spotify, AUPEO!, Pandora, Last.fm, Rhapsody, Napster, Mediafly, Slacker, Sirius XM, and vTuner. Also, both receivers feature DLNA 1.5 support for snagging content from compatible devices on your home's network.

The big difference between the two units is that the TX-NR3009 uses 24-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs for each channel and a high-current power supply with large 18,000 µF capacitors and a large EI transformer. The TX-NR5009, on the other hand, has two 22,000 µF capacitors, with dedicated transformers for audio and video. The digital audio section uses 192 kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs on all channels, coupled to a 32-bit DSP chip.

Because each receiver has terminals for 11 speakers, options for front, surround, height, bi-amped, or remote-zone loudspeakers are readily available. Designed to be the hub of your AV setup, TX-NR5009 and TX-NR3009 each have eight HDMI inputs and two outputs, for add-ons aplenty. Onkyo says that each model will also include a full range of legacy analog and digital AV connections. New connection options include an Ethernet port, two USB ports, Onkyo's own Universal Port, and an RGB input. If you're looking for a little something to add into that front-panel USB, Onkyo offers the optional UWF-1 wireless LAN adapter.

Both new receivers are also compatible with Onkyo's free remote control app, which is available for both Android and iPod touch/iPhone devices.

Onkyo says that the TX-NR5009 will have an MSRP of $2899, with the TX-NR3009 priced at $2199. Expect both models to start shipping to dealers at the beginning of next month.
