Onkyo Brings the 3D to HTiB Systems (HT-S6300, HT-S7300)

By Peter Suciu

Need more proof that 3D can think "inside" the box, or rather inside a home theater in a box? This week Onkyo has added two premium 3D-ready packaged HTiB systems to its line, with the HT-S6300 (MSRP: $749) and HT-S7300 (MSRP: $899). Both systems feature four 3D-ready HDMI inputs that are compatible with Blu-ray 3D players, 3D set-top boxes and 3D HDTVs, including 3D video broadcast content of "side-by-side (half)" and "top-and-bottom" formats. Each models also offers 1080p video upscaling, lossless Dolby & DTS high definition audio, Dolby height processing and even Audyssey automatic room equalization. The video inputs offer upscaling to 1080p via a Faroudja DCDi Cinema process, so that standard definition sources can look more like HD.

The systems include seven home theater loudspeakers, subwoofer, audio-video receiver, Audyssey calibration microphone, and an outboard dock for iPod/iPhone. Both systems include a 290-watt subwoofer that works with each respective receiver's seven 130-watt, 6-ohm power amplifiers, and each unit includes the proprietary Universal Port for connection of an included UP-A1 dock for the iPod/iPhone, as well as an optional HD Radio tuner. To provide quality sound for any room, both systems offer Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction technology, Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume processing, while Dolby ProLogic IIz height channel processing further allows for configurations as back surround speakers or as front height speakers.

The systems also include an HDMI Thru feature, which provides automatic HDMI switching when the receiver is in standby mode, and allows children (or anyone else for that matter) to enjoy programs using the TV's built-in speakers without turning on the AV receiver. The systems also feature a new overlaid graphical OSD, which makes for easy adjustment of settings while still viewing the program in the background.

The HT-S6300 system offers six one-foot tall bookshelf speakers and horizontal center speaker, with four-inch, two-way drivers; while the HT-S7300 features a pair of 41-inch tall floor-standing speakers, each with dual vertically arrayed woofer, and a center that uses the same drivers for timbre consistency. This is complimented with four satellite surround speakers that can be used for the side, back or height channels.
