OSD Audio Debuts Sound Platform, Puts Bluetooth Speakers Outside

By Rachel Cericola

OSD Audio is well known for its outdoor speaker options. However, the company is out at this week's CEDIA Expo in Denver to show off new solutions for both in and outside of the home.

For those looking to make the great outdoors a little greater, OSD just announced the BTR-800 Bluetooth Rock Speakers and BTP-650 Patio Speakers. The hook here is that each one features wireless Bluetooth streaming in an outdoor speaker. These architectural speakers aren't some portable that you need to carry out every time you want to fire up the BBQ, either. Each one has an all-weather design, so it can permanently live outside. However, no crazy wiring setup is needed. Users can just sync up a smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth-enabled device.

Both the BTR-800 and BTP-650 can support Bluetooth streaming up to 150 feet (or 75, if obstructed). Each of these new models will start shipping this month.

The BTR-800 Rock Speakers look like your average rocks, making them easy to blend into the surroundings. However, this rock can actually -- well, rock. Inside, it has an 8-inch polypropylene woofer with butyl rubber surround and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter. Other features include 10-50 watts of internal power and a frequency range of 28Hz-20kHz. Available in canyon brown, granite grey, and slate grey, the BTR-800 sells for $349.95 per pair.

Both the BTR-800 Bluetooth Rock Speakers and BTP-650 Patio Speakers have Bluetooth 4.0 with the aptX codec.

For something closer to home, the BTP-650 Patio Speakers come packing speaker cable and a power cord, plus mounting hardware. Inside, each one has a 6.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer with butyl rubber surround and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter. Featuring a frequency response of 38Hz-20kHz, the BTP-650 comes in black and white with an MSRP of $289.95 per pair.

Once you venture back inside the house, OSD is hoping you'll have the Sound Platform waiting. This new tabletop surround system looks a little like a soundbar and also goes by the name of SP2-1. However, the bi-amp design packs in four 20-watt amplifiers for each of the two down-firing 5.25-inch woofers, each set of four 2.5-inch midrange drives, and the two 1-inch silk dome tweeters.

The Sound Platform can be paired with optical, coax and stereo analog devices. However, it also has Bluetooth 4.0 with the aptX codec for streaming directly to the speaker cabinet.

OSD Audio plans to start selling the Sound Platform later this year, with an MSRP of $599.95. The company then plans to follow up that product at a later date with the Soundsole, which is a smaller version of the full-size model. Listeners can expect the Soundsole to have 10-watt amplifiers to drive each of the two 2-inch full-range drivers and one 30-watt amp for the two down-firing 5.25-inch woofers. This model will also have Bluetooth 4.0 with the aptX codec, as well as Toslink, stereo RCA and mini-jack inputs. Additional details will follow closer to the product's launch, but we do know that OSD is planning to sell the Soundsole with an MSRP of $329.95.
