OPPO is really well known for its line of high-end Blu-ray players. Now, they are planning something a bit more personal. The company just announced a new family of planar magnetic headphones.
As you can imagine, these aren't the kind of headphones you'd strap on for a workout. Years of research with audio and acoustics engineers, chemical and material scientists, and audiophiles went into creating this new category for the company.
The OPPO PM-1 will be the company's first product for the planar magnetic headphone lineup. It has a "planar magnetic driver," which makes it unique to this crowded market. That includes a 7-layer diaphragm and an FEM-optimized high-energy Neodymium magnet system. That diaphragm also has a spiraling pattern of flat conductors etched on both sides, as well as a double-sided design so twice as many conductors can be squeezed into the magnetic field.
What does all of that mean? Audio goodness that you can hoard all to yourself! According to OPPO, the end result is a higher sensitivity, better damping, and even drive force, which is specifically applied over the radiating area. It also has a circumaural (over-the-ear), open back design, with a handpicked lambskin headband and ear pads.
OPPO plans to make the PM-1 available in limited quantities, starting mid-April. It will be priced at $1099.
If that's a bit too rich for your blood (or at least your ears), OPPO plans to release the PM-2 this summer. It will have the same planar magnetic headphone technologies and the same lambskin headband and ear pads, but with a few different materials and a more affordable price of $699.
OPPO also announced plans to release a dedicated headphone amplifier, the HA-1. However, right now there is no release date, pricing or additional information available for that product just yet.
