New Maze Runner, Pan, The Martian and More to Get Dolby Cinema Treatment

By Rachel Cericola

There's nothing like a movie night at home. There are no lines, no waiting and all the snacks you want. However, there's also no Dolby Cinema.

Dolby Cinema uses both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to create the ultimate theatrical experience. And now Dolby has announced five new upcoming features to get the Dolby Cinema treatment.

Dolby Atmos puts you right in the middle of the action, by allowing the audio to move around the entire theater -- including overhead. Dolby Cinema couples that with Dolby Vision, a projection system that uses state-of-the-art optics and image processing to deliver high dynamic range with enhanced color technology and a contrast ratio that promises to exceed anything else on the market today. The end result boasts vivid and realistic images unlike you've ever seen before.

The first of the latest Dolby Vision releases is The Perfect Guy, which is coming out today. This Sony Pictures thriller features a love triangle between Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut. Next week, the second installment in the sci-fi action Maze Runner series is coming from Twentieth Century Fox. And when it does, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will also get a Dolby Vision release.

Fox's highly anticipated The Martian will also get the Dolby Vision treatment on October 2. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian features Matt Damon as an astronaut who is presumed dead after a storm during his mission to Mars -- and so his crew leaves him behind.

The last two of the newly announced Dolby Vision films are Pan and In the Heart of the Sea, both from Warner Bros. Directed by Joe Wright, Pan takes the adventures in Neverland in a new direction, with the title character encountering the pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). That will be released on October 9.

Right before the holidays, Ron Howard will bring Nathaniel Philbrick's best-selling book about the real-life maritime disaster that would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick to the big screen. In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth and will be released on December 11.

This latest announcement brings the total number of Dolby Cinema titles to 13 since the format launched with Tomorrowland in May 2015. (Read "Brad Bird's Tomorrowland Goes Big in Both IMAX and Dolby Cinema" for more information on that release.) Disney, Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. are all now showing support for Dolby Cinema.

Inside Out (Disney-Pixar), Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (Paramount), Pixels (Sony) and San Andreas (Warner Bros.) all recently got the Dolby Vision treatment. The technology will also be available for the upcoming releases of Everest (Universal), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (Lionsgate) and The Jungle Book (Disney).

"We are delighted to see a dynamic slate of movies, with all the major Hollywood studios embracing today's most advanced and powerful imaging and sound technologies," said Doug Darrow, senior vice president of Cinema at Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby Cinema has demonstrated that it can transport the audience into a new world of action-packed blockbusters with booming sounds, but can also pack animated films with heart and emotion."

Dolby Vision is the type of experience that draws you to the theater. Just make sure it draws you to the right theater. Dolby Cinema is currently featured in a few select theaters in the U.S., with more on the way soon.
