Netflix to Start Streaming Original Mob Series Lilyhammer Next Month

By Rachel Cericola

Last year, Netflix announced plans to start streaming House of Cards, an original new drama series from director David Fincher (The Social Network) and starring Oscar winner Kevin Spacey. More recently, the company came forth with plans to revive cult comedy Arrested Development. It's going to be a while before both of those debut. While you wait, you can catch Lilyhammer, another Netflix original, which starts streaming next month.

Lilyhammer is described as a fish-out-of-water story that's set in Norway. It stars Steven Van Zandt, who is best known for his work on The Sopranos, as well as part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

Van Zandt stars as mobster Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano, who enters the federal witness protection program to become a resident of the Norwegian town of Lillehammer. Of course, Frank's dreams of "clean air, fresh white snow and gorgeous broads" aren't exactly part of his new reality.

"Lilyhammer is a well-observed, funny and occasionally brutal story of culture clash, focused on Stevie's inimitable portrayal of an East Coast mobster," said Ted Sarandos, Netflix's Chief Content Officer. "We're proud to introduce this terrific Original Series exclusively to our members. If you love the first episode, there is no need to wait until next week, or to set a DVR, to catch the next one."

Netflix says that all eight episodes of the show's first season will be available for instant streaming starting February 6, 2012. To start, it will be available to Netflix subscribers in USA, Canada and Latin America.

To get a sneak peek at Lilyhammer, you can currently check out the show's trailer on YouTube.

"I am very careful with my choices and this project was so exciting to me because of the wonderful writing, the rich characters and the fascinating culture of Norway," said Steven Van Zandt, who also serves as the show's executive producer. "Netflix is the perfect home for such a unique show."
