My Bloody Valentine to be First Live Action Feature Film on Blu-ray 3D

By Ian White

It has been almost 30 years since the original My Bloody Valetine was released, and sadly it was one of those decent slasher films from the era of Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street that got lost in the shuffle. Not only was it a pure bloodbath with pretty girls who screamed their heads off, but it was decidedly low-budget and authentic looking. It was Hostel before the idea was even in Eli Roth's twisted head. It scared the bejesus out of anyone who saw it at the time. Remakes, in general leave viewers rather cold. Some films don't warrant a remake. The list is too long to include here.

The 2009 remakeĀ My Bloody Valentine 3D was surprisingly decent. Not only was 3D used quite effectively; have to love pick-axes flying off the screen, but the horror was pretty convincing. The screaming coeds died with real gusto, and the jocks died even better deaths. The campy-style worked better for this type of film which was shot way down in a dark mine (fine, so it was a set but it looked like a mine), as opposed to the Hostel-esque style of bloody torture that has become all the rage in Hollywood.

It's hard to believe at this point (although our esteemed editor makes the point in a recent editorial), but My Bloody Valentine 3D is going to be the first live action feature film released on Blu-ray 3D.

What gives, studios? Coming in two weeks on October 5th, and available exclusively at Best Buy, the new release features a MPEG-4 AVC 1080p transfer in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The audio is going to be a DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack which should sound most interesting.

No additional details involving special features have been released yet, but we suspect that there may be a few goodies on this to sweeten the pot. Nice job Lionsgate. Sorta.
