Music Matters: More RSD 2013 Goodies and Hot New Releases

By Mark Smotroff

Just when you thought it was safe to walk away from the Interwebs for a minute and pick up some cool new music on Record Store Day (which was yesterday, for those who aren't paying attention), new updates appeared from labels far and wide. Here are some additional cool things that were released specifically for Record Store Day 2013.  Act now and you may still be able to find them at an independent record store near you.

Surfer Blood, Demon Dance -- Tri Color 7-inch 45 RPM single contains two tracks from Surfer Blood's upcoming album PYTHONS

Emerson, Lake & Palmer : The First Five -- Individually numbered box set that contains the first five ELP records on 12-inch picture discs! Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Pictures At An Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery. They may not sound audiophile spiffy, but they'll sure look real cool on your record player!

ELP

Testament
Testament -- Covers of Scorpions and Iron Maiden on a way cool looking picture disc!

Beak -- 10-inch LP from Portishead-related side project including a cover of Pink Floyd's Welcome To The Machine, originally recorded for a Mojo Magazine CD, never released on vinyl before. 1500 copies.

The dBs - Revolution of the Mind -- Four new tracks on orange vinyl in four color jacket with downloads.

Misfits/The Lemonheads -- Part of Warner's Side By Side series of split 7-inch 45 RPM singles, this features the Misfits version of "Skulls" from 1982 on Slash Records on one side and The Lemonheads 1991 version on Atlantic Records on the flipside of a very cool looking 7" single picture disc

The Doors/X - Part of the Side By Side series. The Doors version-1967 on Elektra Records. X version-1980 on Slash Records on sweet white vinyl.

Cheech & Chong featuring Alice Bowie - Earache My Eye & Turn That Thing Down (Green 45 RPM Vinyl/Picture Sleeve) (note: This gets this writer's vote for most random RSD re-release to date!)

TUNE IN/TURN ON

Barone RSD In Stores! -- NJ fans of The Bongos were fortunate enough to see (and hear) co-founder and singer Richard Barone in his three in store appearances on Record Store Day: Record Collector in Bordentown, NJ, PREX in Princeton and Tunes in Hoboken.

Solo Kink On Tour -- Dave Davies, co founder of The Kinks (with his brother Ray), will be coming on tour this summer, his first in many years since recovering from a stroke.  Make sure you get out to see this living legend who, arguably, invented the sound of modern rock and heavy metal.  Watch for updates on his tour at the Dave Davies web site.

Folk Doo Wop Blues Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Legend -- Dion is playing a select group of shows around the country this Summer.  This scribe may even fly to Las Vegas to see him if the Bronx legend doesn't make it up to San Francisco.  This guy is a living legend who did a lot to keep the flame of rock and roll alive after Doo Wop ran its course and he has put out a huge catalog of great albums and songs worth exploring including recent gems like Bronx Blues Keep an eye on Dion's travels at the Dion Mucci web site.

Streams, Spins, Listens 'n Looks

Flaming Lips' new one, The Terror, was streaming at for a week over at NPR's First Listen, but if you missed it, the album is available on CD, MP3 and vinyl on Amazon as well as at your favorite independent record store.  Amazon is a nice place to buy it tas you'll automatically get the MP3s in your Amazon Cloud account with purchase of either the CD or LP.

Also check out this clip of them live on David Letterman playing "Look...The Sun Is Rising" while singer Wayne Coyne cuddles an electro-cutie baby doll.... really...

Spinner Spins new Todd Rundgren - the new album is out and available to listen to on Spinner. Oddly, they describe it there as "Sounds like: Steely Dan, Crosby Stills & Nash"   -- really??  This album sounds good, but it sounds nothing like those artists, at least to this experienced ear.  Hey Spinner:  I'm available for consulting on better music descriptions! Check it out here.

Sweet Judy On The Radio Again

We don't usually get political here at Big Picture Big Sound, but thought it was interesting enough news to report here that Judy Garland is racing up the charts again in the UK. Why? Well, it seems that since Margaret Thatcher died this past week, a Facebook campaign has coordinated an effort to make "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" (from The Wizard of Oz) a number one hit. You can read more about this on this Australian report or check out the Facebook campaign.

Wings Fly Again Over America and The World

Paul McCartney's classic 1976 triple LP live concert - Wings Over America - is getting the uber deluxe treatment this May (and it looks to be a doozy of a package in line with the amazing box set he put out last year for his 1971 opus, RAM!).
