Mitsubishi Unveils New Batch of Enormous DLP HDTVs

By Rachel Cericola

Mitsubishi is going big this year -- literally. The company just announced a crop of ginormous HDTVs for 2012.

Out of the various DLP lines that the company is releasing this year, the smallest screen size is a mere 73 inches. All of the company's 2012 HDTVs are DLPs, with DLP Mirrors that boast fast switching and smooth images.

This year's least expensive line is the C12 Series. Available in 73- and 82-inch sizes, both models feature a 1080p image, a 6-color processor, a 120Hz sub-frame rate, and two HDMI inputs. Both models also offer separate Brilliant, Bright, Natural, and Game modes. Look for the 73-incher to have an MSRP of $1599, with the 82-inch model coming in at $2599.

The two models in the Mitsubishi 642 Series will include 3D and a 3D emitter (which isn't built in). Each model also has advanced video calibration features, as well as three HDMI inputs. Don't expect to pay more for those 3D features (although you're going to have to buy the glasses). There's no word on when the 642 Series will start selling, but the 73-inch model is priced at $1599, with the 82-inch version costing $2599.

Stepping things up a bit is the Mitsubishi 742 Series. The three models in this line all have a built-in 3D IR emitter, the option for iOS control, and WiFi support via an add-on adapter. The 742 also includes Mitsubishi's StreamTV platform, which features both HD and 3D movies and over 100 other apps through VUDU. A 73-inch model will retail for $1799, with the 82-incher costing $3099. The 92-inch model in the 742 Series adds in a Clear Contrast Screen for $4999.

Mitsubishi's new 842 Series will include the company's flagship 92-inch class DLP Home Cinema TV, with that Clear Contrast Screen and built-in 16-speaker immersive sound technology (IST). This line also features 73- and 82-inch models. All three have the built-in 3D Bluetooth emitters, Bluetooth A2DP audio streaming, ISFccc advanced video adjustments, PerfectColor and PerfectTint technologies, and four HDMI inputs. The 73-inch model has an MSRP of $2199, the 82-inch set will be $3599, and the 92-incher will be priced at $5999.

"Consumers crave large screen televisions that deliver the most immersive home entertainment experience available, which has made the large screen TV market the fastest growing TV segment," said Max Wasinger, executive VP of Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America. "There is no question that 'bigger is better,' so we're introducing large screens that give consumers an unmatched viewing experience for movies, sports, gaming, and 3D content. As we maintain our size advantage in the television market, we've also built in more value and features for consumers who demand TVs with bigger screens and better sound at prices that meet their budget."
