MartinLogan Unveils Invisible Car Audio Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

We've seen MartinLogan crank out some pretty impressive speakers over the years. However, you ain't seen nothing like VaporSound -- literally.

The company just announced its latest audio innovation, a completely invisible speaker setup that's designed for use in autombiles. It may sound funny, although not literally. See, no matter how thin they're built, it's still tough to squeeze a pair of the company's electrostatic speakers into the panel of a car. VaporSound actually puts the technology into the windshield and surrounding windows.

Because it's sandwiched into layers of glass, VaporSound can get your car, truck or van a-rocking with an immersive sound experience, all with absolutely no visible drivers.

Besides creating something that the audiophile world has yet to see/hear, the latest in the company's electrostatic speaker line will allow MartinLogan to branch out to a whole new crop of enthusiasts -- car enthusists.

"We took a look at our overall business and realized there was a whole market of products missing from the lineup -- mobile audio speakers," said Justin Bright, Director of Marketing. "And to think I've been driving to work everyday without the sonic benefits of electrostatic speaker technology!"

To date, electrostatic speakers have used rigid semi-transparent perforated steel "stators" between which the conductive "electrostatic" thin-film diaphragm (the part that makes sound) is sandwiched. This is great for home use, but is hard to pack into a compact car space.

MartinLogan says that the company is currently patenting a process of "vapor deposition," which "impregnates" a uniformly conductive surface onto a specially manufactured and completely transparent thin-film diaphragm. That layer is then placed between two other conductive and transparent thin-film stators. When the whole thing is complete, it looks exactly like any other windshield.

Who cares about seeing it? It's how it sounds that really matters. MartinLogan has made a name for itself by designing and manufacturing the electrostatic speaker for about 30 years. The company is very well known for its Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) XStat Electrostatic Transducer, which combines awesome sound into that unique, patented package.
