MartinLogan Offers Easy Dolby Atmos Upgrade with Motion AFX Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

We've talked at length about the benefits of Dolby Atmos, as well as all of the past, present and future Blu-ray discs that support the audio format. However, to experience Dolby Atmos, you will have to add in some new equipment -- and you typically need to get a ladder involved.

However, MartinLogan is making it so you can have those height channels, all while keeping your feet planted firmly on the ground. The newly announced Motion AFX is a Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker that's designed to sit atop any flat speakers. That way, you can have a Dolby Atmos home theater without actually having to install speakers on the ceiling.

Dolby Atmos is an audio format that uses object-oriented encoding to create a truly three dimensional soundfield with sound coming from virtually everywhere, including above.

To experience Dolby Atmos, you'll need a receiver that supports the technology, as well as additional speakers. Typically, these are placed on the ceiling. However, the Motion AFX can create that height layer by reflecting sound off of the ceiling in a Dolby Atmos entertainment system. It does that using a 0.75-inch aluminum dome tweeter and a 5.25-inch polypropylene cone bass/midrange driver with a stamped steel basket. Those pieces are packed into an enclosure that's specifically designed to angle the drivers towards the ceiling.

As part of the Motion Series, the AFX will work with MartinLogan speakers such as the Motion 15, 20, 35XT, 40 and 60XT. However, if you don't have one of those, you can pair the Motion AFX with any speakers that have a flat top.

MartinLogan will start selling Motion AFX speakers in November 2015, with an MSRP of $599.95 per pair.
