MartinLogan Shows Wireless Subwoofers: Dynamo 700 and 1000

By Chris Boylan

At CEDIA Expo 2009 in Atlanta last week, MartinLogan treated visitors to a demonstration of their new wireless-ready subwoofers, the Dynamo 700 ($695) and Dynamo 1000 ($995).  The subwoofers can be used with any home theater or stereo speaker system in either a traditional wired or a wireless connection.  Note that those who wish to take advantage of the wireless option will need to purchase the optional SWT-1 MartinLogan Subwoofer Wireless Transmitter for $119.95.

For those who choose to go wireless, the sub uses a 2.4 GHz band, but searches for a frequency that is not in use by other local devices so as to minimize any interference.  The bass information is digitally sampled at higher-than-CD quality then transmitted to the subwoofer's built-in wireless receiver for decoding.

The Dynamo subwoofers can be easily converted from down-firing (left) to front-firing (right) for flexibility in installation.

The Dynamo 700 features a 10-inch bass driver while the Dynamo 1000 includes a 12-inch driver.  Both models include built-in heavy duty Class AB amplifiers -- the 700's amp is 300 Watts while the 1000 kicks out a hefty 500 Watts. When not in use, each model consumes less than 1 watt in standby mode. Paired with the company's upcoming thin film speakers, the Dynamo subwoofers provided deep tuneful extension and good integration with the satellites.  MartinLogan reps say they'll work well with virtually any speaker, including their own electrostatic and ATF (Advanced Thin Film) speaker models.

The Dynamo subwoofers feature standard subwoofer controls such as phase, crossover and level.

Both subwoofers and the wireless transmitter will begin shipping later this month.
