MartinLogan Goes Stealthy with New In-Wall and In-Ceiling Architectural Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

MartinLogan is planning to make summer 2011 the summer of rock -- or jazz, punk, movies, or whatever else you like to emote from your home's speakers.

The company just announced plans for nine new Architectural Speakers. All are custom install models, matched to the company's Folded Motion and ultra-premium electrostatic speakers.

The three models under MartinLogan's Motion Series will boast rigid, poly cone woofers and exotic Folded Motion tweeters. When these are released next summer, prices will start at $249.95 each.

The ElectroMotion Architectural Series has another three models, which will get a slightly earlier debut, in spring 2011. MartinLogan says that these are a step up from the Motion Series, featuring low-distortion aluminum cone woofers, a topology Vojtko crossover network, and premium wire connections. Prices on these will start at $399.95 each.

Last, but certainly not least, the Stealth Architectural Series will have MartinLogan's new larger, low distortion Folded Motion XT tweeters, along with black-aluminum, high-excursion bass and mid-range drivers. An advanced topology crossover network boasts polypropylene and low-DF electrolytic capacitors, custom wound inductors, and thermal and current protection. MartinLogan also says this set will have remium wire connections, a gloss piano-black speaker baffle, and solid one-piece cast aluminum chassis. Also coming in summer 2011, prices for the Stealth Architectural Series have yet to be announced.

All of the new speakers will feature low-profile, paintable grilles, with almost no bezel, making them quite stealth indeed. A magnetic system secures the grille into place, which should reduce the risk of any damage during installation.

"We went back to the drawing board on styling and performance, and designed these speakers to be as visually unobtrusive as possible while maintaining stunning sound, voice-matched to our electrostatic speakers," says Carl Masters, MartinLogan's mechanical designer.
