MartinLogan Bows Motion 20 and 40 Home Theater Tower Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

Typically when MartinLogan comes out with a new speaker, you know that you're going to get something special inside -- literally. The company is extremely well known for its patented Folded Motion tweeter.

The company is packing that exclusive perk into the new Motion 20 and Motion 40 tower speakers, both of which are now shipping. Besides the tweeter, each speaker includes larger drivers and a complete new cabinet design.

At 36.6 inches tall, the Motion 20 is considered to be the "compact" model of the new floostanding speakers. However, the appearance isn't nearly as cool as what's going on inside. The Motion 20 has two 5.5-inch aluminum cone woofers in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber format in a cast polymer basket, as well as rigid structured dust caps. Designed for use in small and medium rooms, the Model 20 is recommended for amplifier power between 20 and 200 watts per channel.

For something a little more powerful, the Motion 40 promises to open up the soundstage and the audio possibilities. Inside, the Motion 40 has a 5.5-inch aluminum mid-bass driver, two 6.5-inch oversized bass cones, and a rear-firing bass port. That larger woofer promises a higher output and richer, deeper bass.

Both of the new Motion models also have Precision Vojtko crossovers with custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors. MartinLogan says that each one is also voice-matched to the Motion FX surround speakers and the soon-to-be-released Motion 30 center channel speaker -- just in case you're looking to build an entire system from scratch. If that's the case, consider adding in the Dynamo 500 or 700 subwoofer as well (why not?).

"The Motion Series introduced MartinLogan to a much larger listening audience because of the price point and widespread availability," said Mark Aling, director of marketing for MartinLogan. "With the new 20 and 40 tower speakers, we've improved performance through materials and also given them a complete form factor makeover, that also improves the quality of audio playback."

Available in a high-gloss, piano-black finish, the Motion 20 and 40 come packing MiniETC spikes and 5-way bi-wire push-style binding posts. Both are selling now for $749.95 and $949.95 each, respectively.
