Marantz, Denon Add Spotify to Networked A/V Receivers

By Rachel Cericola

Since Spotify launched in the U.S. last year, it's gained quite an audience. It's kind of hard not to appreciate a service that delivers almost any song you can think up -- even the bad ones!

Seriously. I've tried to stump this service before, and they keep coming back with songs that I actually want to hear.

Well, now it looks like more people will get to enjoy this service, but through a much larger setup. Both Marantz and Denon have announced plans to add Spotify to select networked AV receivers.

That basically means that if you have one of the compatible receivers, you can have over 18 million audio tracks available at your fingertips. Also, Spotify promises streaming at a high-quality 320 Kbps bitrate. Now which receivers will get the goods?

Denon's 9.2-channel AVR-4520CI has 150 watts per channel, 4K and 3D support, and Apple's AirPlay.

On the Denon side, Spotify access will be available in the company's new flagship AVR-4520CI receiver (MSRP: $2499), as well as four of the previous receiver releases. Owners of IN-Command Series models like the AVR-3313CI ($1,199.99), the AVR-2313CI ($899.99) and the AVR-2113CI ($649.99), as well as the new 7.1-channel Model AVR-1913 (SRP: $579.99), are eligible for a nice (and free!) firmware upgrade.

If you're more about Marantz receivers, you can have your Spotify -- and steam it, too. The company plans to add the music service to new and upcoming products, as well as offer a firmware update for owners of four existing receivers. Those models include the newly announced AV7701 Pre Processor ($1699.99) and the existing SR7007 ($1,799.99), SR6007 ($1,199.99), SR5007 ($849.99), and NR1603 ($649.99).

To stream Spotify to any of the above receiver models, you will need a Spotify Premium subscription, which requires a monthly fee of $9.99. Each receiver also includes access to SirusXM, vTuner Internet radio and Pandora. (Just remember that subscriptions and fees may apply as well.)
