Logitech Announces Harmony 700 Universal Remote

By Rachel Cericola

In case the recently announced Harmony 900's $399 price tag is a little rich for your blood, Logitech is adding another slick IR remote to its Harmony lineup today. This time, they are packing multiple device controls (up to six) into the Harmony 700, at a much more affordable $149.99.

"Millions of families around the world are investing in better home-entertainment systems, complete with flat-screen TVs and other devices. However, each new device adds another remote to the coffee table and another level of complexity to what should be an enjoyable experience," said Ashish Arora, VP and general manager of Logitech's Harmony business unit. "If you have a half-dozen components and an AV receiver, the new Logitech Harmony 700 is the smartest way to get the most out of that setup."

No more digging into the couch cushions or scrambling around your A/V setup. The Harmony 700 takes those six devices and works them together, through Harmony's now famous one-button Activity-based paradigm.

One press of "Watch a Movie" can fire up the TV, the Blu-ray player, the receiver, and whatever else you want to add into the mix. All of that, as well as comprehensive controls for your devices, can be easily setup via Harmony's PC- or Mac-based software.

At last look, Harmony's online database had codes for about 250,000 different devices from over 5,000 brands. The company says it's still growing, too.

Other features for the 700 include a color LCD screen, which displays icons for your favorite channels. It also comes with rechargeable AA batteries that promise a week or more of total system control between charges.  When the battery indicator shows the juice is running low, just plug it into a nearby wall outlet using the included power cable and you'll be good to go.

Logitech says that the Harmony 700 should be available any day now (it's already available for order on Amazon.com). Expect it to retail for $149.99.
