Leon: The Professional and Fifth Element to get New Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Releases This Fall

By Rachel Cericola

We know a lot of you who put The Fifth Element up there as one of the greatest demo discs to have on-hand. Well, get ready for better bragging rights and the ultimate upgrade.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) just announced plans to release new Blu-rays for both The Fifth Element and another Luc Besson cult classic, Leon: The Professional. Both will be released on October 27, 2015.

Both the action/thriller and the sci-fi spectacle will get an all-new 4K restoration as well as a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. To indulge in the Atmos experience, you will need a Dolby Atmos-enabled receiver and additional speakers. Just know that if you don't have those (yet), you can still enjoy each of the new releases on your existing setup.

That said, having Dolby Atmos will allow you to enjoy special effects and bullets flying from every direction -- even overhead.

Set in the 23rd century, The Fifth Element stars Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman. In addition to the upgraded image and new audio track, the upcoming Blu-ray will also include new behind-the-scenes featurettes, such as "The Visual Element," "The Digital Element," "The Star Element," "The Alien Element," "The Fashion Element," "The Diva," "Imagining The Fifth Element," and "The Elements of Style."

Besides a very young Natalie Portman, Jean Reno, and Gary Oldman (again!), Leon: The Professional will feature both theatrical and extended versions of the film -- both of which will be remastered in 4K with Dolby Atmos. The lineup of special features will include "Cast and Crew Look Back," "Jean Reno: The Road to Leon," "Natalie Portman: Starting Young," and the film's original theatrical trailer.

Both titles will also get a separate release as part of Sony's Supreme Cinema Series lineup. That means that there will be separate purchases available, which include collectible packaging and a 24-page booklet with photos and other tidbits. The discs will be the same as the new Blu-ray release, but will be available in limited quantities.

Pre-orders have yet to begin and pricing hasn't even been announced. However, you can mark your calendar for October 27, 2015, if you're looking for the best possible version of both classics -- at least so far.
