LG to Show 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED TV at CES 2014

By Rachel Cericola

The holiday season has officially passed. If you didn't get what you really wanted this year, LG Electronics wants to make sure you have a very happy New Year.

The company just announced plans to show new OLED TVs at CES 2014. The lineup promises to be LG's "most comprehensive" in the category, and will include at least three new models. That selection will include the extra-large 77-inch 77EC9800 Ultra HD Curved OLED TV, new 55- and 65-inch OLED TV models, and the previously released 55-inch 55EA8800 Gallery OLED TV and 55-inch 55EB9600 Curved OLED TV.

According to LG, the 77-incher is the world's largest Ultra HD Curved OLED TV to date. CES usually has plenty of surprises, but for now, that title is standing.

The new 55-, 65- and 77-inch models all have proprietary WRGB OLED technology and double as an Ultra HD TV, meaning each one has a screen resolution with 3840 x 2160 pixels. The 77EC9800 also has a curved screen for an immersive viewing experience. This larger model also has LG Color Refiner, an infinite contrast ratio managed by the company's High Dynamic Range (HDR) algorithm, and Ultra Cinema 3D features. The latter uses film-type patterned retarder (FPR) technology. However, thanks to the TV's resolution, you will get a full 1080p image to each eye.

LG says that the 77-inch 77EC9800 is the world's largest Ultra HD Curved OLED TV.

Other features in the 77-incher include smart TV features and LG's Tru-ULTRA HD Engine Pro for upscaling SD, HD and Full HD, as well as Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) for smooth on-screen action.

All of LG's Ultra HD Curved OLED TVs have HDMI 2.0 and support for both H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats. Each set even has a built-in decoder for displaying content from external devices connected to one of the set's HDMI, USB or LAN ports.

LG is also making its Gallery OLED TV line stand out, with the Canvas Speaker, a 2.2-channel unit that can crank 100 watts from the TV bezel. It also has eGallery features with a variety of display modes that can turn your TV into a true work of art. For instance, a Gallery Mode can turn the TV into a picture frame, while the Healing & Remembering Mode delivers "mood-lifting sounds and images."

The company says it's ready to jump into the burgeoning OLED TV, with manufacturing plants in Brazil, Poland, China and Thailand. LG is also planning to open a new facility in Mexico, which will produce OLED TVs for North American markets.

"All of the exceptional OLED models we're showcasing at CES 2014 offer the ultimate in picture quality and refined, modern aesthetics," said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV Division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "Driving the evolution of television into the next generation, LG will continue to employ its technological and design expertise to bring impressive OLED TVs to market."

There's no word on when these new sets will starts selling -- and at what price. However, we'll probably get more info at the 2014 International CES, which will run from January 7-10, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
