LG’s 2017 OLED TVs Will Support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos

By Rachel Cericola

Everyone is out at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, promising the biggest and brightest TVs. However, there's one thing LG Electronics has that the competition does not -- the power of the latest and greatest from Dolby.

Today, the company announced that all LG 2017 OLED TVs will support Dolby Vision high-dynamic-range (HDR) technology and Dolby Atmos audio. This will give viewers the most cutting-edge entertainment experience, all with one product.

Dolby Vision is a proprietary form of HDR technology, which also has a wide color gamut. HDR allows video content to have more steps between the blackest black and the whitest white, which means you can capture high-contrast scenes, such as sunsets, starfields, street lamps, and more, all with much greater realism. Dolby Atmos gives that viewing experience a boost by allowing sound to move all around the room, including overhead.

To help deliver that HDR, LG has given the entire 2017 OLED lineup new pixel dimming control technology, which promises perfect blacks, infinite contrast, and an expanded color gamut.

"High-quality imaging and audio are essential elements of the TV viewing experience," said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. "By incorporating Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos into our premium OLED TVs, the first TV of its kind, we are able to offer consumers amazing realism across both image and sound that is vivid, nuanced, and powerful."

All of LG's 2017 OLED TVs will support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, including the 77/65W7, 77/65G7, 65/55E7, 65/55C7, and 65/55B7. The company says that all LG flagship Super UHD TVs will continue to support Dolby Vision in 2017, which includes the LG 2017 SJ9500, SJ8500, and JS800 Super UHD TVs.

Currently, more than 80 studio titles are available in Dolby Vision, and more than 100 titles are available in Dolby Atmos. A total of 25 titles are available in both formats. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have announced support for Dolby Vision titles and Dolby Atmos titles, with another 100 hours of original content currently streaming in Dolby Vision across leading OTT providers globally. Of course, viewers will soon be able to enjoy Dolby Vision on Ultra HD Blu-ray, which is scheduled for release sometime in 2017.
