LG Unveils 8 Different Lines of 4K Ultra HD LED TVs for 2015

By Rachel Cericola

Less than two weeks after LG Electronics revealed plans to include the newly announced webOS 2.0 smart TV platform on its 2015 4K Ultra HD TVs, we have news about the actual TVs. The company will release a total of eight different 4K LED TV lines, in an effort to meet just about every need.

The company plans to debut all eight models at next month's 2015 International CES, which runs from January 6-9, 2015, in Las Vegas. According to LG, the lineup will feature new designs, more features, and better picture quality across the board.

LG says that the new 4K TV lineup will have all of the "superb color reproduction" from the company's ColorPrime Series. However, that will come with either Wide Color LED or Quantum Dot technology.

That Wide Color LED version uses a variety of phosphor-based LEDs to display lifelike images and a 25 percent increase in the color gamut. The recently announced Quantum Dot technology bumps the increase in color gamut up to 30 percent, with high color accuracy.

Each version has an eye-popping 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution and In-Plane Switching (IPS) 4K panels, all packed into a super-thin cabinet that measures just millimeters -- or about the size of an OLED TV. The 2015 lineup will also feature plenty of other 4K perks, such as LG's 4K Upscaler algorithm and a built-in 4K High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) Decoder, which supports 30p and 60p 4K content from external devices.

Other features include LG's True Black Control local for better contrast and deeper blacks, LG's Natural Color feature to cut down on color reproduction errors, and the Contrast Optimizer for the best color contrast and brightness possible. Also, as previously reported, each model will have the new webOS 2.0 smart TV platform, which boasts a more user-friendly interface, with better boot times, more customization, and a Launcher Bar for easy access to favorites.

The new lineup will come in multiple screen sizes across the UC9, UB9800, UF9500, UF9400, UF8500, UF7700, UF6800 and UF6700 series. Five of those will include LG's multichannel Ultra Surround System, which was designed in conjunction with harman/kardon. The UC9, UB9800, UF9500, UF9400 and UF8500 models will all get the compact, forward-firing speakers. However, the UF9500 adds in an integrated Auditorium Stand to "reflect and centralize" the sound.

"LG 4K Ultra HD TVs are designed to offer a viewing experience unmatched in the TV industry," said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "The breathtaking picture quality is underpinned by our latest ColorPrime technology for a truly superb home entertainment experience."

There's no word on other specific features, as well as release dates and pricing. However, we should expect to see more specifics come out of CES 2015.
