LG 50PZ950, 60PZ950 Lead New Line of 3D Plasma HDTVs

By Chris Chiarella

The recently unveiled Infinia PZ950 is LG's new flagship series of 3D-capable plasma HDTVs, a large-screen, high-performance PDP with the bonus of online content options via LG's SmartTV technology, operated with the Magic Motion Remote. The 3D-capable PZ950 will be available in a 50-inch (50PZ950) and 60-inch (60PZ950) size and will use active shutter 3D glasses and an RF emitter built into the television, freeing users from the bothersome line-of-sight-requirements of IR glasses. It also offers user-adjustable 2D-to-3D conversion, to watch almost anything with a 3D effect (assuming one would even want to do that).

The new LG SmartTV function expands upon the online content platform introduced by the company in 2008, granting consumers access to virtually limitless content, thousands of movies, customizable apps, videos and web browsing, all through a clean, simple user interface. And in addition to the wand-like Magic Motion point-and-click remote, owners can access the free iPhone/Android app to turn many smartphones into controllers, complete with handy QWERTY keyboards. The PZ950 arrives with a USB wireless broadband adapter in the box.

The Infinia PZ950 is also a THX-certified 3D display, having been rigorously tested and tweaked to assure correct gamma, luminance, and color temperature, for optimal picture quality. More than 400 laboratory tests analyze left and right eye images for color accuracy, cross-talk, viewing angles and video processing performance. Prior to THX 3D Display Certification, this series had to pass THX 2D certification as well.

The new LG PZ950 3D plasma is their top-of-the-line series.

Like the PZ950, the more affordable new Infinia PZ750 Series is a THX-certified 3D 1080p plasma with 2D-to-3D conversion, 600Hz max Sub-field Driving to greatly reduced perceived motion blur, and the TruBlack Filter to enhance detail. It's Wi-Fi-ready with LG's NetCast entertainment access and the Magic Motion remote. Both series are available in 50-inch and 60-inch class screen sizes, and both boast the Infinia Design, at less than two inches thick and with a bezel just 1.18 inches wide.

The more affordable PW350 Series loses some features but still delivers high-quality 3D.

The 3D PZ550 Series (also in 50- and 60-inchers) offers online media options from content partners including Netflix, CinemaNow, VUDU, Picasa and others with LG NetCast 1.0. And the more-affordable-still (we assume) PW350 Series drops the internet connectivity but offers solid video performance in more compact screen sizes of 42 and 50 inches, measured diagonally. While not THX-certified, the PZ550 and PW350 Series are no slouch image-wise, with their own 600Hz max Sub-field Driving. The PZ550 and PW350 Series are bordered by LG's TruSlim Frame, a bezel less than an inch wide.

Final pricing and specific availability dates for the four new 3D plasma series have yet to be announced.
