LG Bows 2011 Blu-ray Players: BD690, BD670, BD650, BD640, BD630, BP650

By Greg Robinson

LG Electronics used the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to show off its 2011 lineup of Blu-ray Disc players, with some models featuring 3D output, integrated Wi-Fi, Gracenote MusicID, and even a built-in hard drive.

Leading the pack and serving as LG's new flagship player is the BD690, a network Blu-ray 3D player featuring, most notably, LG's SmartTV technology and an integrated 250GB internal hard drive for media storage. The drive allows consumers to create a "Media Library" for storage and instant playback of music, photos, and video as well as movies purchased through the VUDU video service, one of the applications available through SmartTV.

Working down the line, the BD670 and BD650 both offer the SmartTV interface, DLNA compatibility, and Blu-ray 3D playback but lose the internal hard disk. Whereas the BD650 is Wi-Fi ready (an optional adapter is required), the BD670 delivers integrated Wi-Fi and Gracenote's MusicID, a feature it shares with its its flagship sibling. With supporting software, MusicID allows consumers to listen to songs from television shows and movies while also delivering internet content pertaining to the song, artist, or album.

At the entry-level, LG is offering the BD640 and BD630, 2D-only Blu-ray Disc players with access to Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, and YouTube (a.k.a. Netcast 1.0) but lacking the new SmartTV interface. The BD630 lacks wireless capabilities but the BD640 is Wi-Fi ready thanks to an included adapter.

Finally we have the BP650, LG's first portable Blu-ray Disc player. Details are few and far between on this one thus far, but watch this space as more information emerges in the days ahead.
