LG Begins Shipping 2015 OLED and LED 4K Ultra HD TVs

By Rachel Cericola

Back in January, we reported on a lot of new TVs that were debuting at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. Now, you can get ready to see some of those TVs up close. LG Electronics just announced plans to start shipping the first of its 2015 OLED and LED 4K Ultra HD TVs.

The lone OLED TV in the lineup is LG's 65-inch 65EG9600 Art Slim Curved 4K OLED TV, which promises super bright colors and strong black levels at almost any angle. This set combines that eye-popping 4K image that's four times the resolution of a 1080p TV with self-lighting OLED pixels. The latter basically means that the pixels can turn on and off individually for brighter colors and deeper blacks -- all without the need for backlight. It also has LG's 4-Color Pixel technology, which adds a white sub-pixel to the usual red/green/blue scheme. Other features include a super-thin design that curves for a more immersive viewing experience, a 4K upscaler, 3D support, the new webOS 2.0 Smart TV platform, and harman/kardon sound. LG will start shipping the 65-inch 65EG9600 Art Slim Curved 4K OLED sometime this spring, with an MSRP of $8,999.

Although the 65EG9600 is LG's only new OLED TV for 2015 (so far), the company will keep selling the 55-inch 55EC9300 1080p OLED TV, priced at $3,499.

Next up is the Prime UHD TV lineup. These aren't OLED TVs, but they do promise to create a cinema-like experience via LG's ColorPrime technology, Ultra Luminance, the 4K In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel, and the LG Prime Mastering Engine. That ColorPrime is key though, and can magnify the range of colors using different LED phosphor colors. The end result boasts greater image depth and realism. Despite measuring just 8.5mm in depth, each set in theĀ UF9500 Prime Series also packs in a 240Hz refresh rate, the webOS 2.0 Smart TV platform, and harman/kardon sound. Available in two sizes, the 65-inch 65UF9500 has an MSRP of $4,499, with the 55-inch 55UF9500 priced at $3,699.

Rounding out LG's 2015 4K TV lineup is the new UF8500, UF7700 and UF7600 Series. Coming this spring, all three lines offer 4K images, the updated webOS 2.0 Smart TV platform, and harman/kardon audio in sizes ranging from 43 to 70 inches.

The UF8500 Series includes 3D support and the slim-bezel Cinema Screen design in two screen sizes. The 65-inch 65UF8500 is priced at $3,199, with the 60-inch 60UF8500 coming in at $2,999. The UF7700 Series will include the 70-inch 70UF7700 ($3,999), the 65-inch 65UF7700 ($2,999), and the 60-inch 60UF7700 ($2,499). And finally, the UF7600 Series will have the year's smallest screen options, with the 55-inch 55UF7600 ($1,999), the 49-inch 49UF7600 ($1,699), and the 43-inch 43UF7600 ($1,399).

"Picture quality is the top consideration for television shoppers, and LG's 2015 4K TV lineup delivers," said David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing at LG Electronics USA. "OLED is unequivocally the best screen technology in the market today, and LG is the only manufacturer to offer OLED TVs, both 4K ULTRA HD and Full HD this year. Our Prime UHD LED TV models with ColorPrime technology offer the best in 4K LED with expanded color capability for more lifelike images and, like all of our Ultra HD LED TVs, they deliver incredible clarity and detail with four times the resolution of Full HD."
