LG Beefs Up webOS Smart TV Platform with GoPro, Netflix and More

By Rachel Cericola

Just a few weeks ago, LG Electronics debuted webOS 2.0, the company's latest Smart TV platform. Now, they're making a few tweaks. At the 2015 International CES, LG announced a really interesting lineup of new content partners that will deliver more HD and 4K Ultra HD content to LG Smart TV users than ever before.

LG is currently working on deals with GoPro, DIRECTV, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, HSN, Showtime, DramaFever and iHeartRadio.

The GoPro partnership is particularly interesting. GoPro is the maker of the world's most popular wearable video camera lineup. That means that viewers will be able to use the GoPro Channel app to witness global expeditions and adrenaline-pumping action, all from the living room couch. The LG exclusive allows viewers to stream GoPro videos on-demand today, but there are plans in the works to add access to 4K content in the near future. For now, however, you can tap into the GoPro Channel using LG's Magic remote.

"LG screens provide a beautiful display for the immersive 4K and HD content that GoPro is known for," said Adam Dornbusch, GoPro's head of programming and distribution. "As entertainment continues to evolve into new formats and new platforms, the GoPro Channel app will bring our best user-generated content and original productions into the homes of millions of LG Smart TV owners and to a new audience of viewers."

LG is also working with DIRECTV to put the satellite provider's 4K VOD service right on the TV. However, to tap into those goodies, you will need to be a DIRECTV subscriber with the Genie HD DVR. You will also need some patience, since this feature won't be available until later in 2015.

Until that comes along, LG is adding new 4K Ultra HD content through partnerships with Netflix, Amazon and YouTube. This will make 4K TV series, movies, music videos and more all part of the webOS 2.0 experience. Netflix is going one step further to give LG its seal of approval, by certifying the company's new Smart TVs under the new "Netflix Recommended TV" program. This is a new independent Smart TV evaluation program, designed to identify sets that can deliver a superior Internet TV experience.

LG's webOS 2.0 will also include access to shopping through HSN, new content for Showtime TV fans, international flavor from the DramaFever service, and digital audio streaming from iHeartRadio.

"LG's webOS Smart TVs make finding the content you want fast and simple, so that consumers can spend more time enjoying, and less time searching for, the content they crave," said David VanderWaal, head of marketing for LG Electronics USA. "We're offering access to more streaming content providers than ever before. I can tell you that consumers are going to be blown away by the range of inspiring content available, including thrilling videos on the GoPro Channel app available exclusively for LG Smart TVs -- and experiencing them on our 4K OLED TVs is truly mind-blowing."
