LG Announces HDR-enabled Super UHD 4K TVs

By Rachel Cericola

Last year, we were introduced to a lot of great things in the world of 4K. For 2016, LG Electronics has some "super" plans for the TV technology. The company will launch a line of Super UHD 4K TVs.

LG's Super UHD lineup will debut with four different TV models. The UH9500 series will include TV sizes ranging from 55 to 86 inches, the UH8500 line will have 55- to 75-inch screen sizes, and UH7700 TVs will feature sizes ranging from 49 to 65 inches. The fourth model will be LG's first production-ready 98-inch 8K Super UHD TV (model UH9800). There's very little info on the 98-incher, but we know it will be on the show floor during next week's CES 2016 in Las Vegas.

Each of these new Super UHD TVs boasts better color options, new picture technologies, and sound-enhancing features, as well as high dynamic range (HDR). All of the UH9500, UH8500, and UH7700 models have an IPS display with True Black Panel and Contrast Maximizer technologies, so that each TV's awesome picture can be enjoyed from almost any viewing angle.

All LG Super UHD 4K TVs are also stamped as "HDR Plus," which means that each TV will support 4K HDR content and deliver the most realistic image possible. To make that magic, these TVs include LG's Ultra Luminance technology to boost brightness and black levels, as well as Color Prime to heighten HDR performance. There's even an SDR-to-HDR conversation engine, so viewers can pump up standard content to near-HDR quality.

The UH9500 and UH8500 models also have LG's Color Prime Plus. This perk is designed to expand each TV's color palette by using a new, thicker color filter and new LCD phosphors to achieve about 90 percent of the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) color space. The company also mentions the Billion Rich Colors feature, which promises to deliver over one billion color variations to LG Super UHD TVs.

With the UH9500, LG will debut a new design concept, which includes an ultra-thin 6.6mm screen depth and near-invisible bezels. This combination should make the TV look like it's floating on air. The UH9500 also has harman/kardon sound and a Magic Sound Tuning feature that can tweak audio based on a room's specific conditions. The UH7700 offers Color Prime, Billion Rich Colors, Ultra Luminance, and Contrast Maximizer features, but housed in a slightly different design configuration.

All of LG's 2016 UHD 4K TVs will also include the new webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform, which has new navigation features and more content options than ever before. It will also offer new mobile connectivity and remote options.

"We're confident our 2016 HDR-enabled Super UHD TV will generate much excitement not only in the industry, but also with consumers in general," said Brian Kwon, president and CEO at LG's Home Entertainment Company. "We are the only company with a dual strategy focused on both OLED and UHD TV technologies and this is proof that we're committing to delivering the most advanced picture quality and home entertainment innovations to consumers around the world."

LG will be showing the Super UHD 4K TV lineup at next week's CES 2016 in Las Vegas. The company plans to start shipping select Super UHD models sometime in early spring.
